Disney’s Descendants 2 finally premiered July 21st, and my kids couldn’t be happier! They waited two long years for Mal and Evie, Carlos and Jay to return! And they returned with a bang, and some great songs, being sung all around my house ever since.
The Disney Channel original movie is the follow-up to the hugely successful first film that premiered in July 2015. The movie follows that sons and daughters of some of the most well-known prince and princesses, and of course villains, in Disney history.
It’s not a new concept, as Mattel introduced Ever After High dolls in 2013. But the idea is a great one. Let’s create a new world based on the sons and daughters of beloved characters of our past.
For the Descendants, they have divided the characters, introducing us first to the Isle of the Lost, where all villains have been banished. The island surrounded is by a force field that doesn’t allow anyone in, or out. Queen Belle and King Beast rule the Kingdom of Auradon, and the famous royal sons and daughters attend Auradon Prep school.
The main characters of the movie are Prince Ben (Belle and Beast’s son), who is preparing to be named king. It is during his preparation that he decides to give some villain kids (also known as VKs) the opportunity to attend Auradon Prep and chooses Mal, the daughter of Maleficient, Carlos, the son of Cruella De Vil, Evie, daughter of The Evil Queen and Jay, son of Jafar.
The cast is amazing, including some of the girls favourite Disney Channel stars such as Dove Cameron (from Live and Maddie) and Cameron Boyce (from Jessie and Bunked). The OG villains were played by some greats such as Kristin Chenoweth and Kathy Najimy. Sadly, the parents are not in the new movie.
Descendants 2 picks up shortly after where the first one left off and everyone’s favourite characters are all back, with the exception of Audrey (the daughter of Aurora – aka Sleeping Beauty). The VKs have found their place at the school. Evie is everyone’s personal stylists and Jay is the captain of the fencing team. The Royal Cotillion is coming up, but Mal is feeling the pressure of keeping up with Ben’s, and the Kingdom’s expectations, while Carlos is trying to gather the courage to ask Jane to be his date.
But with any good plot, comes conflict. And this time it’s Mal who contemplates if going back to the dark side would be easier, and relies a lot on her mother’s spell book to get her though various situations and when the pressure gets to be too much, she decides to escape back to the Isle in order to get away.
The Isle of the Lost has a new crew of VKs in charge, including Uma, the daughter of Ursula, Harry, the son of Captain Hook and Gil, the son of Gaston.
Again, these characters are larger than life and captivating from the moment they hit the screen. China Anne McClain, the actress who plays Uma, steals every scene.
The movie ends is filled with some catchy tunes and dance routines, that my girls have already started imitating.
While we counted down to it’s premier, the girls watched every Descendants: Wicked World animated short, and every special and video with the cast. The Little Mouse was especially excited to watch a behind the scenes video with Canadian-born Anna Cathcart, who landed the role of Dizzy, daughter of Drizella and granddaughter of Lady Tremaine (Cinderella’s wicked step-sister and step-mother). She’s adorable, and already a household favourite. As is Uma.
So, it’s safe to say my girls loved Descendants 2, and are already asking when the next movie will be out. They have been singing various songs around the house ever since. Two years ago, they chose to dress as Mal (the Little Mouse) and Evie (the Little Bird) and have already called dibs on this years’ costumes, Uma (the Little Bird) and Dizzy (the Little Mouse). I guess I better start looking for those costumes!
I think Disney did a great job with this movie, and while I would have loved to see more new villain kids, and even their parents, I too can’t wait for the next movie.
In honour of Descendants 2, today’s Music Monday pic is Chillin’ Like a Villain, featuring Evie, Carlos, Jay and Ben and is one of the girls favourite dance scenes on the green railing. Enjoy!
