Growing up, my brother and I used to love watching awards shows; music, movies – it didn’t matter. It was fun watching the live red carpet, check out the dresses and wait for our favourite celebrities and artists to appear on screen. Hoping we could stay up to watch the end, even though we would never be allowed. Our hope was always to stay up to see as much as we could.
However, as I’ve gotten older, it seems harder and harder to connect to these artists.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love the Golden Globes and the Oscars, it’s the music ones I feel less connected to. It’s no longer the artists I want to hear, but the music, and while there are plenty of performers, it all seems to be about the shock and awe.
And I’m not too sure I’m into that anymore.
Last night I watched the 2013 American Music Awards. Missing the first twenty minutes or so, as we put our kids to bed, we turned on the television to see One Direction performing and I said to my husband, “The Little Bird would have loved to watch this.” We have a couple of pint-sized 1D fans in our house now, and both can often be heard singing a few of their hits.
Their time will come, and just like me, they’ll hold their breathe waiting while the announcer says, “and the award goes to…” They’ll hope it’s her favourite singer/band that gets to go on stage, win an award and thank their fans. And they’ll swoon, just like I did.
I admit that I didn’t watch the whole show last night. And spent more time saying, “who’s that?” than anything else. I actually know the songs, but couldn’t match the artists/band name if I had to.
At one point a band called Imagine Dragons was introduced, where I muttered another, “who?” When they started to play, I actually knew the song, but had never heard of this band. And then they won Favourite Artist – Alternative Rock. It was then that I decided my song for today’s Music Monday.
This post is dedicated to those artists and bands who put in their time, pay their dues and things pay off. Even if people like me don’t really know who you are, take comfort in knowing that I like your music!
Happy Monday!
Radioactive
By: Imagine Dragons
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa
I’m waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I’m breathing in the chemicals
I’m breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
I’m waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
I raise my flags, don my clothes
It’s a revolution, I suppose
We’ll paint it red to fit right in
Whoa
I’m breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
I’m waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
All systems go, the sun hasn’t died
Deep in my bones, straight from inside
I’m waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I’m radioactive, radioactive
