Never gonna

The other day a good friend of mine tagged me in a picture, and it made me laugh out loud. See this particular friend of mine has known me since grade 8. This particular friend also had the extreme opposite taste in music as I did. As I’ve mentioned, I was more of a fan of the pop music scene, and she was more of new wave and English bands (sometimes those descriptions applied to the same group). I think it was a good pairing; she introduced me to the likes of Depeche Mode, The Cure and U2 and I introduced her to Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block and Rick Astley. For the record, I did like other music, but for this exercise I am focusing on just a few.

She never went out and purchased an album (or cassette) of the groups that I liked, but to be fair, neither did I. Disclaimer: She did have an influence on me, and in my later years, I came to like – and purchase – many Depeche Mode and U2 cds. I never came around to The Cure, however.

Rick Astley was, in particular, one of my faves. I liked his voice, the danceability factor of his songs and I thought he was cute, quick frankly! He didn’t necessarily make it big, but he made an impression on my life. I even got to see him in concert, when he came in 1988 to Canada’s Wonderland (Kingswood Music Theatre). After that, a poster of his face lived on my bedroom wall for many years afterward.

Rick Astley

So, thanks S for sending this little card my way, because it made me laugh, but also brought me back to some good memories of listening to music and writing in my bedroom as a teen! And while some people may be embarrassed to admit they liked an artist that wasn’t at the top of the charts, I would rather admit that I have great memories of laughing and dancing with friends, as we hung out gossiping in my room while listening to Never Gonna Give You Up, Together Forever and one of my faves It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man! And you know I still know all the words to all these songs…as they’re playing on YouTube right now, as I type this!

Happy rainy Monday!

Never Gonna Give You Up

By: Rick Astley

We’re no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment’s what I’m thinking of
You wouldn’t get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I’m feeling
Gotta make you understand

CHORUS
Never gonna give you up,
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry,
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

We’ve known each other for so long
Your heart’s been aching but you’re too shy to say it
Inside we both know what’s been going on
We know the game and we’re gonna play it
And if you ask me how I’m feeling
Don’t tell me you’re too blind to see (CHORUS)

CHORUSCHORUS
(Ooh give you up)
(Ooh give you up)
(Ooh) never gonna give, never gonna give
(give you up)
(Ooh) never gonna give, never gonna give
(give you up)

We’ve known each other for so long
Your heart’s been aching but you’re too shy to say it
Inside we both know what’s been going on
We know the game and we’re gonna play it (TO FRONT)
